HARDCORE METAPHYSICS THE GOD PARADOX by Gaylon McDowell
God is both immanent and transcendent; immanent within and transcendent above and beyond. God is above and beyond as the Creator of the Universe and the substance, life, and intelligence of it. However, we can only truly know God for ourselves by turning our attention inward to the God in ourselves. The same God in me is the same God that is the Creator of the universe. I am the self-expression of God. Recognizing that masculine and feminine energies reside in every soul, we can acknowledge God as both father and mother. One is wisdom; the other is love. One provides for, while the other nurtures. One is thought; the other is feeling. The completion of creation requires both energies-the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, the masculine and the feminine energy, the yin, and yang. What we see as gender roles in creation are reflections of how creative ideas come together to bring forth manifestation. God can be your father, mother or whatever you need to balance your soul. Another paradox is law and grace. God as law is principle in action. Goad as Law states that you must reap what you sow. This is sometimes called the law of cause and effect, the law of compensation, universal law, karma and “what goes around comes back around.” These terms explain that what we think, we become. Thoughts held in mind produce after their own kind. Life is consciousness. We are the image and likeness of God; therefore, God’s grace or favor, which we did not earn, is always expressing through our ignorance. We always receive more good than we produce in mind through law. God as desire is always pushing and prodding us to stretch, forgive, love, evolve and accept more of God’s good. It doesn’t matter how far you have fallen, the moment you wake up, you are entitled to your spiritual birthright. Read Luke 15:11-32 the parable of the lost son–for further understanding of how you can always recover from your mistakes the moment you become aware of your spiritual nature. As Emmet Fox wrote, “Christ is Lord over karma.”
FINDING THE ESSENCE OF GOD
God is not a person. God is not a supernatural male or female. God is often depicted as an old white male with a long beard in the clouds, the supposed location of heaven. We call God the “man upstairs” and point to “Him” when we accomplish things. A common saying is, “Somebody up there likes me”. Many people view God as a Holy Father with an anger management problem and a giant ego that needs constant recognition. This concept of God strikes down people, kills babies and destroys cities with natural disasters. Even today, we call natural disasters in our insurance policies “acts of God”. This humanlike God tells His chosen people to kill men, women, children and the elderly in His name. These horrific, so-called God-inspired, sacred, violent acts are all through the religious books of many faith traditions. This is one of the primary reasons why New Thought luminaries interpret the Bible metaphysically. The God some people interpret literally is scripture is not worthy of the title “The Most High”. God is the totality of the ideas of good we call Absolute Good or Truth. A person is relative, while God is absolute. Relative means something that belongs to the same group or something else because of shared characteristics or qualities. For instance, I’m a human and a male. I have the same parts and DNA shared by all human males. I am relative to all other human males. God is absolute, which means nothing is relative to God in the universe. God has no relation to anything else because God is formless, invisible intelligence we call Spirit. A person is a human being and God is Being. Human beings change endlessly. Our bodies change, our lives change, our minds change. God as Being is changeless. God is eternal, permanent and changeless truth. A person is limited while God is limitless. The human bodies we have are temporal. Sometimes life can seem like it is here today, gone tomorrow. Nonetheless, we are eternal spiritual beings expressing as human beings. A person is confined to place, time, and form, while God is omnipresent. Your body can be in only one place at a time. Your spiritual nature and mind are limitless and non-local, but we physically exist as form in time and space. God is timeless and eternal. Eternity really means beyond time, space, and form. There is just as much God here as there ever has been or will be. Since God is present everywhere at the same time, some people wonder why God does not stop bad things from happening, such as crime, murder, racism, and dictatorships. Well, God created us and empowered us with free will. We have to clean up our own messes. God did not create problems, we did. God is omnipotent, yet we are the directors of our own lives. You can love your children; however, you cannot learn to walk for them, eat for them, learn for them or grow for them. As a parent, you can love them, teach them, guide them and empower them to be productive and functional. It is the same with God. When we surrender to God, our lives can be transformed. The surrendering is part of the action needed to transform.
GOD LIVES WITHIN
It’s a good thing God is not like us. The universe would be in chaos. We do not need a God with a multiple personality disorder. God is always life, love, wisdom, power, and substance. We express as much of God’s good as we can realize and use. Biblical authors portrayed God as a person because that was their understanding. They saw God as a Near Eastern ruler; however, you do not have to think like a first-century person to be a 21st-century spiritual practitioner. God lives in you. You are divine. You are a divine spiritual being made in the image-likeness of God. I personally believe that the divinity of humankind is the most important concept taught in New Thought. As previously mentioned, many people have been marginalized because of race, gender, social status, religion, sexual orientation and much more. When you realize the psychological damage that went along with the marginalization of people for centuries, you can understand what Dr. Carter G. Woodson conveys in “The Mis-Education of the Negro” when he writes: “If you can control a man’s thinking, you do not have to worry about his actions. When you determine what a man shall think, you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do. If you make a man feel that he is inferior, you do not have to compel him to accept an inferior status for he will seek it himself. if you make a man think that he is justly an outcast, you do not have to order him to the backdoor. He will go without being told. And if there is no backdoor, his very nature will demand one.” When you know who you are spiritual, you create your own freedom. I believe New Thought must remain true to its hardcore metaphysical roots. New Thought without its roots is a progressive theology without any power. There is something radically right about human beings, and we have the opportunity to teach people how to express the goodness within them. The world is waiting for our hardcore metaphysics so we can help transform human consciousness.
