“Curiosity Over Comfort” Rev Masando Hiraoka Science of Mind Magazine
Worldwide pandemic, a racial reckoning, a collective awakening to modern, systemic racism and another heated election season. All of these happening at once means it takes a lot just to show up to everyday life. There’s so much transformation happening right now, and I’ve found the need to cultivate some extra practices and spiritual tools to help me navigate this time without going completely bonkers with anger, fear, anxiety and judgement. One of the most useful tools has been to approach both my inner and outer worlds with a sense of curiosity. When I’m flooded with emotions that are difficult to hold, that I so desperately want to run away from or numb out of my system, I find holding them with a sense of curiosity can help alleviate the suffering that may come when I’m in resistance. Curiosity can also help us in this cosmic and inextricable connection we have with others. I have to admit, I’m often flabbergasted by what I see on social media. But if I can approach my own reactions with curiosity, I can discover ways to both allow wholeness to stay intact while communicating thoughts and perspectives more clearly. Curiosity opens me to understanding and possibility. It also allows me to search for the real reasons someone may hold another point of view so we can speak to the root of the situation before turning someone into an enemy. The world is changing fast, and we are here for it. Let’s stay strong. Let’s stay brave. Let’s stay curious.
